Using Participatory Rural Appraisal to Research Livelihoods

This chapter provides an introduction to participatory methods, focusing in particular on Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) initially developed by Robert Chambers. PRA evolved in the 1980s and 1990s, in response to top-down development and natural resource management. It has been used in a diversity of livelihood studies and is largely known for its valuable set of tools aimed at understanding local peoples’ challenges and perspectives. The development of PRA stems from two key insights: that people targeted by development need to be consulted if development projects are to achieve sustainable change, and that poverty is best understood by listening to the people who are affected by it. This chapter provides a brief genealogy of PRA and key critiques, and describes some key PRA methods useful in livelihoods research. It goes on to explore two aspects of PRA in more detail: how to embrace heterogeneous livelihood possibilities, and the role of language in accessing people’s perspectives through PRA. The chapter ends with a summary of the key points.
