The chapter provides an introductory overview of Thomas Sieverts’ book Zwischenstadt (literally: ‘in between city’), briefly chronicling its impact and outlining its criticism. The guiding thesis is that, for Sieverts, landscape is the key to perceiving and designing sprawling urban regions. Sieverts entrusts landscape with the task of bearing the identity of and linking together the fragmented and agglomerated parts of the urban region.
