Sweden experienced the two decades from 1935 to 1955 as a time of continuous peace. In spite of surrounding war, Sweden managed to stay seated as a spectator. It was, however, strongly influenced by the war: an enormous administrative machinery was established, young men were called in for emergency service, and almost all necessities were rationed.1.
