The economically important forest pathogen H. irregulare represents one of the most complete sequenced genomes among Basidiomycota/Agaricomycotina, with few gaps and a low nucleotide error rate (1 per 100,000 bp). Ninety percent of the predicted genes have support from microarray analysis or cDNA sequencing although individual gene models would benefit from a curation supported by a high-coverage RNA-seq data. The sequencing of the H. irregulare genome has paved the way for many other genetic and genomic studies within the species complex and will be an invaluable resource for the research community for many years.
